Artificial turf can get hot, whether you’re located in an area that stays scorching all year long or only in the summer months. It may possibly be one of the greatest shortcoming of a synthetic surface. When a synthetic turf surface is exposed to sunlight for extended periods of time, it can get hot and take a little while to get cool. But due to a lot of research and testing, Southwest Greens has the answer — Hydrochill.

WHAT IS HYDROCHILL?

Hydrochill is an innovative technology that is added to the turf's infill that utilizes the science of evaporative cooling. Evaporative cooling works similarly to how sweating cools you. As the synthetic grass is warmed up by the sun (solar radiation), moisture that is stored in the surface treated with Hydrochill is released to dissipate the warmth and leave a cooler, more comfortable surface.

HOW DOES IT REALLY WORK?

Ambient heat outdoors does not wholly dictate surface temps. Eventually, solar radiation (sunlight), the sun’s angle, wind, cloud coverage, and several other components contribute to surface temperature. Hydrochill uses water to offer a cooling effect. This moisture comes from rainfall, dew, or irrigation to maintain a synthetic turf surface cool for days, based on weather conditions. It provides its greatest benefit in the hottest time of the day.

Based on both lab and outdoor lawn thermocouple testing, Hydrochill has achieved 30 - 50 degrees lower surface temps in comparison to regular turf systems. More tests were carried out by a FLIR-Certified Thermographer employing the most sophisticated camera images and tech. Forward-Looking Infrared readings show just how much more cooling is provided by Hydrochill, diagram below.

This groundbreaking technology comes in two kinds — as a spray application and as a pre-coated sand infill. Both are equally effective at cooling the surface. Hydrochill moisture and can be activated by watering systems or an easy spray from a garden hose. It’s non-toxic and doesn’t have negative environmental effects.

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES?

REDUCES HEAT-RELATED ILLNESSES

According to the CDC, heat exhaustion and heat stroke can be very unsafe. Heat exhaustion is the human body’s answer to an excessive loss of water and salt — ordinarily while sweating. Heat stroke is even more dangerous, which happens when the body cannot control its temperature, causing sweating systems to collapse. A turf cooling system can help to lessen these conditions by diminishing the surface temps.

MORE COMFORTABLE

Although it’s not a very hot and sunny day, synthetic grass temperatures can still get hot enough to be uncomfortable. Hydrochill will operate continuously to maintain your synthetic yard at a lower temperature if you live in a weather system that experiences frequent downpour. If you reside in a dry weather system, a swift rinse every couple of days will ensure it is operating perfectly. It will be much more ease for both kid’s and pet’s feet.

BETTER PLAY

If you are considering Hydrochill for a sports field, it’s one of the most important investments you can make. Humidity and heat can produce problems for players by increasing their body temp dangerously high and leading to dehydration. When artificial grass is cooled using an advanced technology like Hydrochill, athletes will perform better by positively impacting their endurance.
